This volume brings together renowned scholars and early career-researchers in mapping the ways in which European cinema —whether arthouse or mainstream, fictional or documentary, working with traditional or new media— engages with phenomena of precarity, poverty, and social exclusion. It compares how the filmic traditions of different countries reflect the socioeconomic conditions associated with precarity, and illuminates similarities in the iconography of precarious lives across cultures. While some of the contributions deal with the representations of marginalized minorities, others focus on work-related precarity or the depictions of downward mobility. Among other topics, the volume looks at how films grapple with gender inequality, intersectional struggle, discriminatory housing policies, and the specific problems of precarious youth. With its comparative approach to filmic representations of European precarity, this volume makes a major contribution to scholarship on precarity and the representation of social class in contemporary visual culture.

The White Indians of Mexican Cinema theorizes the development of a unique form of racial masquerade—the representation of Whiteness as Indigeneity—during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, from the 1930s to the 1950s. Adopting a broad decolonial perspective while remaining grounded in the history of local racial categories, Mónica García Blizzard argues that this trope works to reconcile two divergent discourses about race in postrevolutionary Mexico: the government-sponsored celebration of Indigeneity and mestizaje (or the process of interracial and intercultural mixing), on the one hand, and the idealization of Whiteness, on the other. Close readings of twenty films and primary source material illustrate how Mexican cinema has mediated race, especially in relation to gender, in ways that project national specificity, but also reproduce racist tendencies with respect to beauty, desire, and protagonism that survive to this day. D’où vient l’engouement jamais démenti pour les cinémas d’Asie ? Quelles pistes de réflexion esthétiques, historiques ou théoriques posent-ils ? Quels en sont les problématiques et les enjeux principaux ? Tels sont les axes qui structurent cet ouvrage évoquant des cinématographies aussi riches que celles du Japon, de la Chine, de Taiwan ou encore de la Corée du Sud et du Nord, de la Malaisie ou des Philippines... Tout en questionnant la relation cinématographique entre l’Orient et l’Occident, et plus particulièrement les rapports des cinémas d’Asie entre eux, les spécialistes réunis dans cet ouvrage analysent les nombreuses interférences esthétiques qui se nouent par le cinéma. Qu’il s’agisse de repenser des notions cinématographiques telles que la perspective ou la profondeur de champ, de rejouer le conflit entre classicisme et modernité, ou de mettre en scène des mémoires et des événements historiques, les cinémas d’Asie continuent d’interroger notre regard. Metteur en scène du visible, Stanley Kubrick appelle à explorer une nouvelle, et très ancienne, conception du cinéma. Barry Lyndon ou 2001 Space Odyssey en témoignent : le cinéma est de plus en plus engagé dans une réflexion sur sa propre nature et, en même temps, sur la nature de la représentation. Abandonnant les structures narratives classiques, il découvre l'ambiguïté de ses images, qui promettent un signifié et donnent à voir bien autre chose. En cela il dit comment, classique ou moderne, toute image porte en soi un « coeur de ténèbre », où notre oeil risque toujours de sombrer. Entraîné par Kubrick, le regard filmique propose ainsi un point de vue sur les conditions de la visibilité, et donc sur l'esthétique.
